Workshop 2.1
International migration: a new road to development

Wednesday, 17 September, 14.30-18.00

Organisers:

Howard Duncan
CIC Citizenship and Immigration Canada

Keiko Osaki
United Nations Population Division, United States

Migration theorists have traditionally linked migration to development through the analysis of the root causes of emigration. More recently, policymakers in some countries and regions have come to regard development efforts or development assistance as vehicles for reducing migration flows. This workshop will take a more progressive approach to the migration-development link and seek ways to manage phenomena associated with migration for direct development purposes. Such migration management practices and policies would attempt to make migration a powerful instrument for economic and social development in the less affluent countries of the world.
